Ignatian Book of Days by Jim Manney is a book I’ve used daily for over 3 years.  The author gives Scripture passages as well as reflections on the day. These readings help those of us following Ignatian spirituality so that we will find ways to help ourselves and others. For June 15 the meditation gives us an anxious person’s prayer by William Browning, CP. It states: “O Holy Spirit give me stillness of soul in you, calm the turmoil within with the gentleness of your peace. Quiet the anxiety within, with a deep trust in you. Strengthen the faith within with the awareness of your presence. Confirm the hope within, with the knowledge of your strength. Give fullness to the love within with an outpouring of your love Holy Spirit, be to me a source of light, strength and courage So that I may hear your call ever so more clearly and follow you more generously.” This is followed by the Scripture: Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

The entries are similar to the one just given by men and women who are Jesuits or followers of Ignatian Spirituality.  The entries (about 5-8 lines) give practical ways of meditating on a Scripture passage and reflection for the day and basically focuses our day on Christ.  It is an authentic understanding to walk in the footsteps of Ignatius. The entries are about values we hold in Christianity and the lives of the Saints. Some of the questions included for reflection are “Who are your friends? What can you do to strengthen your friendships? Talk to God about this.” Or “Recall a decision that didn’t have the result you foresaw. What came of it? Was it a dead end?”  Each question can support our desire for knowing and loving Christ with the help of the Holy Spirit all our lives. It is a book I have on my bedside table
